On 29 April, TUM Sustainability Day 2026 brought together the university community, international partners, and representatives from industry and society to explore how sustainability ambitions can be translated into concrete action.

More than 5,000 participants from academia, business, and civil society, including representatives from nearly 30 international partner universities, gathered at the Garching campus for a day of exchange, experimentation, and collaboration.

Across the campus, participants took part in projects, workshops, panel discussions, and competitions addressing a broad range of challenges, from renewable energy and biodiversity to sustainable mobility, robotics, and circular solutions.

The event placed particular emphasis on cooperation across disciplines, sectors, and borders. Contributions from TUM leaders, researchers, and external experts demonstrated how universities can connect scientific knowledge with practical responses to environmental, economic, and social challenges.

As part of the programme, TUM Liaison Officer, Iris Figliolia moderated the panel “Strategic EU partnerships: TUM’s approach to sustainability through EuroTech’s Working Group on Sustainable Campuses and the exchange of best practices with partner institutions.”

The session gathered Sina-Marie Rupp, TUM Sustainability Manager, and Professor Helen Sooväli-Sepping, Counsellor for Sustainable Development and Green Transition at Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech). Their discussion explored the work of EuroTech’s Sustainable Campuses Working Group, sustainability strategies at TUM and TalTech, and the role of international cooperation and peer learning in strengthening institutional approaches. It also highlighted the long-standing partnership between TUM and TalTech through EuroTeQ and opportunities for closer future collaboration.

The value of long-term international academic partnerships was emphasised as well, including collaboration through the EuroTech Universities Alliance and other global networks.
