The EuroTech Summer School 2026: Energy Storage & Demand brought together 41 students and early-career researchers from 11 institutions for a week focused on energy storage and demand management.
Held from 31 August to 4 September 2026 at EPFL Valais/Wallis in Sion and EPFL Lausanne, the programme included expert lectures, laboratory visits, a field excursion, participant presentations and networking activities.
From energy storage fundamentals to real-world applications
The programme opened in Sion with an introduction to the role of energy storage in future energy systems, followed by sessions on batteries, redox flow batteries, supercapacitors and grid-connected storage.
Participants also visited laboratories, where they saw demonstrations of fuel cells and electrolyzers.
A guided visit to the Grande Dixence dam provided an opportunity to learn about pumped-storage hydropower. The day also featured a participant poster session, where PhD students and postdoctoral researchers presented their research.
The programme continued at EPFL Lausanne with sessions on metal hydrides, thermal energy storage, Power-to-X, and real-time grid monitoring and control. Laboratory visits and demonstrations of technologies under development complemented the sessions.
The final day focused on hydropower and pumped-storage research, followed by sessions on future developments in energy storage and cross-sectoral system integration.
An international group of participants
The Summer School welcomed 41 participants: 27 PhD students, 8 Master’s students, 4 postdoctoral researchers and 2 participants in other roles.
Participants came from 11 institutions, including EuroTech members EPFL, TUM, TU/e and DTU, as well as Tallinn University of Technology, Technische Universität Hamburg, AGH University of Krakow, Technion, ÉTS Montréal, BOKU Vienna and El Bayadh University Center.
The programme featured presentations and discussions among participants from different institutions and career stages.
Beyond the classroom
Throughout the week, participants also took part in social activities and informal gatherings, before coming together with speakers for a farewell lunch at the close of the Summer School.
