5 December 2018 |On 5 December, the MOBiLus consortium was selected as winning bid of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology’s (EIT) call for a Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) in the field of “Urban Mobility”. With future headquarters in Barcelona, MOBiLus will gather 48 partners from across the EU and beyond to conceptualise, enable and activate the best innovation in sustainable urban mobility. The EU will contribute funding of around €400 million for seven years (2019-2026), making the project one of the largest publicly funded initiatives for mobility on the globe.
Urban mobility is under constant pressure and subject to crucial challenges such as urban growth, congestion, accessibility and air pollution, to name a few. At the same time, residents strive for high quality of public space, convenient mobility and increased participation in decision-making. As an international community bringing together a unique combination of eleven universities, seven non-academic research organisations, seventeen industry partners, thirteen cities and a wider additional network of thirty-nine affiliated partners, MOBiLus will revolutionise solutions for “Mobility for Liveable Urban Spaces.” Four EuroTech Universities – Technical University of Denmark, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and Technical University of Munich – formed the initial academic core consortium, having first met and exchanged at a mobility workshop organised at the EuroTech Universities Alliance Brussels Office in 2015.
“Through this KIC and particularly its new, unique innovation instruments for citizen engagement and policy advice, we will make sustainable and scalable urban mobility solutions a reality”, says Carlo Van de Weijer, Director of TU/e’s Strategic Research Area “Smart Mobility” and designated Chair of the MOBiLus Supervisory Board. “The research excellence and the innovative spirit shared by the EuroTech Universities have been a great basis for our ambitious proposal.”
